In 2008, our Tokyo Chapter of the Armed Forces
Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) Scholarship Program
awarded 10 scholarships worth $2,000 each to graduating high school seniors
pursuing degrees in one of the following areas: computer science, electrical
engineering, software engineering, information technology, math, physics, or a
related field of study. This award was based on academic merit and
professional promise, as well as demonstrated leadership.
The winners were all from the Tokyo metropolitan area. Especially well represented were the high schools that serve the US Military bases at Yokosuka, Yokota and Zama. Winners from Nile C. Kinnick High School (Yokosuka) were: Qinxiang Lin Fang; Alexander Safley; and Ivan Rivera. Winners from Yokota High School were: Angelica Sanders; Robert Rodell; John Niescier. Winners from Zama American High School were: James Wilson; Nadine Abear; and Criselle Olaes. Yuki Kato, a Tokyoite exchange student at Bishop Miege High School rounded out this group of exemplary individuals.
Special thanks go out to Paula Fielder, Cynthia Sanders and
Angela Butler from, respectfully, Kinnick, Yokota and Zama High Schools. They
were instrumental in helping us get a wide range of qualified candidates. They
are also helpful in helping us reach the mathematic and science teachers that
are eligible for the annual
Science Teaching Tools Awards (STTA) that our Tokyo Chapter 171 AFCEA grants
in conjunction with the AFCEA Educational Foundation every year. These STTA
grants are awarded directly to local mathematic and science
teachers for supplies and equipment in their classrooms. Click
here for the STTA application.
In addition to scholarships to graduating seniors and grants for teaching
materials, we are also planning to grant scholarships for active duty enlisted
personnel. Please check back here soon for additional information and
application.
